Dr Alicia Thornton

Tailored dermatology care

Dr Alicia Thornton is a Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists (FACD).  

Dr Thornton is known for her personable manner and thorough approach to each patient. She was drawn to dermatology because of her passion for skin health for all ages from babies through to adults, and her interest in both surgical and medical specialties. She enjoys tailoring effective individualised treatment solutions and seeing the positive physical, social and psychological benefits for her patients.

Dr Thornton completed a Bachelor of Science with a major in Biological Anthropology prior to her medical degree at the Australian National University. She was awarded a university medal and the Graham Wilkinson prize for best medical student due to her commitment to rural health, education and student welfare, as well as academic success. Dr Thornton completed her postgraduate training in Tamworth followed by appointments at Canberra Hospital and John Hunter Hospital as well as overseas voluntary work in Tonga, Samoa and West Africa. She has published research papers in the Australasian Journal of Dermatology, and continues to supervise research in the areas of atopic dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa and psoriasis.

Dr Thornton is committed to training the next generation of dermatologists and providing public hospital dermatology services as Visiting Medical Officer at John Hunter Hospital and John Hunter Children’s Hospital, where she supervises general dermatology and paediatric dermatology clinics on a weekly basis. She is a Conjoint Lecturer at the University of Newcastle, and provides education for both medical students, training doctors and general practitioners.

Dr Thornton is qualified in all areas

of dermatology including: 

  • Skin cancer detection & surveillance

  • Acne and rosacea

  • Biologic therapy for inflammatory skin conditions

  • Autoimmune skin disorders such as cutaneous lupus

  • Pigmentary disorders such as vitiligo

Dr Thornton has a special interest in the diagnosis and management of paediatric skin conditions in newborns, infants, children and

adolescents, including:

  • Eczema (dermatitis)

  • Psoriasis

  • Infantile haemangioma

  • Acne

  • Infections such as molluscum contagiosum and tinea

  • Acute rashes

  • Alopecia

  • Vtiligo

  • Periorificial dermatitis

  • Seborrhoeic dermatitis

  • Inflammatory skin conditions

  • Genetic skin conditions

  • Vascular and pigmented lesions including birthmarks

Surgical & Cosmetic Dermatology

Comprehensive range of surgical treatment for benign lesions, skin cancers and skin conditions.

Dr Thornton offers the

following procedures:

  • Skin biopsy for diagnostic purposes

  • Excision of skin cancers including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma

  • Cryotherapy (freezing)

  • Phototherapy (Narrowband UVB)

  • Photodynamic therapy

  • Intralesional steroid injections

  • Scar management

  • Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections for hyperhidrosis

  • Laser therapy for conditions such as rosacea, freckles and pigmentation and skin rejuvenation

  • Anti-wrinkle injections

Dr Thornton consults at Frontier Dermatology on Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays and holds public paediatric clinics
at the
 John Hunter Hospital.
